NotesNews: French scuttle fleet in Toulon harbour. November 27. The French fleet was scuttled by its crews six hours after German tanks rumbled into the great naval base of Toulon before dawn this morning. Munitions dumps, oil tanks and all stores of value in the naval arsenal were blown up, along with the coastal batteries. Some of the warships fired on the Germans to gain time for the ships to be sunk, and the captains of all the vessels stayed on their bridges till their ships went down.... Two submarines escaped by slipping out to sea to join the Free French forces...[Chronicle of the 20th Century]
