Implied textPoem: Arab's farewell to his steed
NotesNews: November 16: .. North Africa: The British First Army, reinforced by mobile U.S. units, continued to push forward across the Tunisian frontier. Gen. Eisenhower's G.H.Q. reported that small French military units had begun to co-operate with the Eastern (Tunisian) and Central (Algerian) task forces, that a French force had joined U.S. troops at Oran, and that clearance and maintenance of ports and harbours was proceeding. It was also stated that 250 Germans and Italians of the Axis Armistice Commissions in North Africa had been taken prisoner. The Stefani Agency announced that Gen. Walter Nehring, Rommel's second-in-command in the Western Desert and a leading German tank specialist, was commanding Axis forces in Tunisia... In Libya, the Eighth Army, advancing on Benghazi both along the coast and by the road farther inland, recaptured Derna and Mekili... [Keesing's Contemporary Archives p.5467]
