NotesNews: July 9: Russia: Particularly heavy fighting W. of Voronezh and in the area of Rossosh (on the Moscow-Rostov railway 100 miles E. of Volchansk). Soviet tanks and aircraft launched heavy attacks in the Central sector of the Kursk-Kharkov front and regained some ground, though the position continued serious; the Germans made desperate efforts to widen the wedge driven across the Don towards Voronezh, and though unable to force the river in any strength (a number of light tanks and lorried infantry units were wiped out on the E. bank) succeeded in driving the Russians from positions S. of the bridgeheads and widening the breach. Marshal Timoshenko struck heavily at the enemy's flanks at both ends of the front, 3,000 Germans falling in the N. sector in one day. Berlin admitted "ferocious Soviet resistance" in the Voronezh area... [Keesing's Contemporary archives p.5261]

He served as German chancellor from 1933-1945 and head of state (Fuhrer) from 1934-1945. He established a single-party dictatorship based on the totalitarian and autocratic ideals of national socialism. He gained support for his views on German nationalism, anti-Semitism, anti-capitalism and anti-communism through his impassioned speeches and propaganda. He wanted to establish a New Order of absolute rule in Europe and pursued a policy of seizing land by force for the Aryan people.
