NotesNews: May 18: Russia: A special Soviet communique stated that the Kharkov advance continued and that, between May 12-16, the Red Army had liberated over 300 inhabited localities in advances varying from 12 to 38 miles; killed about 12,000 German troops and taken over 1,200 prisoners; captured 365 guns, 25 tanks, 188 trench mortars, 379 machine-guns, 46,413 shells, 23,284 mines, about 1,000,000 rounds of ammunition, 90 lorries, 25 radio transmitter sets, and 39 ammunition, food and equipment dumps; and destroyed 400 tanks, 210 guns, 217 machine-guns, about 700 lorries and 147 aircraft. Marshal von Bock, in an effort to stem the Russian advance, continued to throw in reserves of men and material, particularly tanks, from reserve forces and other sectors of the front...
