Keesing's Contemporary Archives: Hitler's Speech to the Reichstag. - The "Peace Offensive". The conclusion of the German-Russian Agreement about the partition of Poland was followed by announcements in the German press of a "peace offensive", by the Fuehrer. In pursuance of this the following speech was made by Herr Hitler to a specially convened session of the Reichstag on Oct 6: " ... To-day I must deplore that people who have not seen enough war in their thirst for blood were not present where there has been war. ... Why should there be any war in the West? For the restoration of Poland? The Poland of the Versailles Treaty will never rise again. Two of the greatest states in the world guarantee that. The final shaping of this territory, and the question of the restoration of a Polish State, are problems which cannot be settled by war in the West, but exclusively by Russia and Germany. ..."
