NotesSee DB0098 for original artwork. News: William Hague pledged yesterday to fight the next
election on a policy of retaining the pound after securing a decisive 84.4 per cent endorsement
from Tory party members for his anti-single currency stance. Twenty five years after the
Conservatives took Britain into the Common Market, the ballot of party members confirmed a
decisive shift towards euro-scepticism among Tory activists. mr Hague, clearly delighted, said
the party had reached a verdict as "emphatic and supportive as any leader could ask for". [George
Jones, The Daily Telegraph, October 6 1998]
