NotesNews: 23 June: President Nixon and Mr Brezhnev signed an agreement calling for the prevention of nuclear war and a commitment to try to end the strategic arms race. The new agreement committed the Russians and Americans to proceed from the premise that they forswear the use of force against each other, against each other's allies, and against any other country in circumstances which may endanger international peace and security.
