NotesNews: 4 Jul: The Prime Minister said in the Commons that he would be prepared to discuss
amending the Industrial Relations Act if, after a period, the unions would come to the Government
and show where the Act was damaging either to their interests of to the interests of the country.
But, as if to set the framework for his talks with the TUC leaders, Mr Heath emphasised that
there would be no repeal of the Act. Mr Wilson accused the Government of importing into the
British system of industrial relations "an alien, irrelevant, provocative framework of
un-workable legalistic concepts". Labelling his as "the uncaring Prime Minister", Mr Wilson
demanded to know how many shop stewards Mr Heath had met since taking office.
