Ed Miliband's office has been told that Unite tried to ensure that Douglas Alexander, the shadow foreign secretary, lost his seat in a shake-up of constituency boundaries. News of the move will only escalate tensions between Labour and Unite, the party's largest donor. On Friday, the Labour leader referred to police claims that Unite had tried to manipulate the selection of the party's candidate to replace Eric Joyce, the Falkirk MP. It is alleged that Unite ensured that dozens of its members joined the Labour Party to make sure the trade union's favoured candidate succeeded Mr Joyce.
