NotesNews: "David Cameron was deserted by a majority of Tory MPs last night as the Commons voted overwhelmingly to back gay marriage. The Prime Minister hailed the measure as "an important step forward for our country" that would make society stronger after MPs voted by 400 to 175 in favour. But the vote left Mr Cameron at odds with nearly 60 per cent of his MPs amid warnings from his backbenchers that the issue could cost him the 2015 election. Of the 303 Conservative MPs, 136 opposed the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, including 12 ministers and 6 whips; 127 backed it; and 40 abstained. Mr Cameron had set himself a target of winning the support of more than half his parliamentary party, or at least more than half of those who voted, but failed on both counts. Analysis of the vote revealed the extent to which he relied for support on those to whom he had given jobs in government. More than a third of the Tory "yes" vote was made up of ministers. The split among Tory backbenchers was 118 against and 78 for. ... " Roland Watson, The Times
