NotesNews: 2 Jun: The stand-off on the line of control in Kashmir represents a serious threat of nuclear war. Although the Pakistani army is well equipped and better trained than the Indian force, it knows that it is likely to lose any conventional war. India has twice as many combat aircraft and three times as many soldiers on the border. This imbalance means that in the event of a big military reversal Pakistan could resort to a nuclear first strike. Western envoys have been arriving in the region to try to de-escalate the crisis. Admiral Sir Michael Boyce, the British chief of the defence staff, was in New Delhi last week and Jack Straw, the foreign secretary, arrives in the next few days. The United States is putting intense pressure on Musharraf to act against the militants. [Sunday Times]
