NotesNews: 10 Mar: Larry Lindsey, George Bush's economic adviser, hit back at Europe over its criticism of Bush's decision last week to impose tariffs on steel imports. "An economic grouping that owes its basis to high steel quotas, not to mention agricultural quotas and protectionism on drugs, is an unusual set of countries to criticise the country with the lowest tariffs in the world, and the most open markets, for putting on a temporary tariff," he said. Lindsey, who met Ed Balls, the Treasury's chief economic adviser, on his brief visit to London, refused to be drawn on the question of whether Britain should join the euro. [Sunday Times] News: 10 Mar: Tony Blair and Dick Cheney, the American vice-president, will tomorrow discuss plans that call for as many as 25,000 British troops to take part in an operation to topple Saddam Hussein. The troop numbers are included in a list of options for action against the Iraqi dictator which will form the centrepiece of the talks. However, government sources last night expressed doubts that such a large number of troops, part of a ground army of 250,000 being considered by the Americans, would be provided by the UK.
