NotesNews: 29 Jan: Labour was tearing itself apart last night after ousted Peter Mandelson vowed to clear his name. Tony Blair was faced with his biggest crisis just as the party needs to unite in the run-up to an election. As Labour MPs turned on Mr Mandelson, one minister said: "Every time he speaks now, it will damage us. It is just not helpful." Fury broke after the former Ulster Secretary denied he lied about contacting the Home Office over a passport bid by Indian tycoon Srichand Hinduja. He said he had been "isolated" at a meeting with Mr Blair and his spokesman, Alastair Campbell, and had decided to fight back. [Daily Mirror]
