NotesNews: 8 Nov: Even as the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff roared aflame with cheering, there was a moment of great pathos. The Queen was presenting the Rugby World Cup to the Australian captain, John Eales, a triumphant young giant who towered over his sovereign as he placed the cup on his head: his crown, for the moment. But Mr Eales is also a republican. If he'd had his way, Queen Elizabeth II would have ceased to be the Queen of Australia and more than 45 pc of his fellow Australians agree with him. The anti-republicans did prevail, and the monarchy is safe in Australia for the next few years. [Daily Mail]
