NotesNews: 14 March: Prince Charles's closest aide resigned yesterday in the wake of the devastating report into life at St James's Palace. But within hours it was revealed that Michael Fawcett has been promised an astonishing deal which many will see as the price of his silence. Fawcett, 40, who started life as a lowly footman but rose to become the prince's personal consultant, will receive: A £500,000 payoff; a contract to continue freelance as the prince's events manager earning the same £100,000 a year as before; financial help to remain permanently in his £400,000 grace-and-favour house in West London - in effect a home for life. The controversial payday for the man nicknamed 'Fawcett the Fence' coincided with the report by Sir Michael Peat which laid bare the shabby private universe of the Prince of Wales. It exposed a culture of threats, self-interest and mismanagement at the heart of Charles's household, and delivered a humiliating assessment of the prince's judgment. Charles, who today returns from Bulgaria after a two-day visit, is said to be at his 'lowest ebb for years'. [Daily Mail]
