NotesNews: 4 Feb: Former Nasa advisers and engineers came forward yesterday to say that the space agency not only ignored their warnings that a shuttle disaster was inevitable, but dismissed them for making their views public. Another senior aerospace engineer, Don Nelson, who wrote to President Bush last August giving warning of a "catastrophic shuttle accident", said that he had resigned from Nasa in January 1999 after being reprimanded twice for "not using the proper channels" to raise safety concerns. Their claims came as Mr Bush announced his 2004 budget, in which funding for the space shuttle programme is set to increase from $ 3.2 billion (Pounds 1.95 billion) to $ 3.9 billion. Ari Fleischer, the White House spokesman, said the increase had been prepared before Saturday's disaster. The boost in spending follows a decade of budget cuts for the programme. The cuts have led to numerous warnings by space flight experts and government auditors that safety is being compromised, making it more difficult to deal with problems routinely occurring in the fleet, including brittle insulation and fuel line cracks.
