NotesNews: 2 Sep: An ICM poll for the Daily Mirror and GMTV today shows that 71% of Britons oppose joining a war on Iraq without the approval of the United Nations. Only 12% of those questioned thought an invasion of Iraq justified under any circumstances. Nelson Mandela is reported to have called Mr Bush directly to urge against a war and is also keen to persuade Mr Blair against such a move. The Tory leader, Iain Duncan Smith, urged Mr Blair to make a public case for a pre-emptive attack. The evidence on Saddam Hussein's weapons and intent existed but the debate had been allowed to "drift", he claimed. [The Guardian]
