Notes | Notes: "After the Allied invasion of Sicily (Operation Husky started on July 9, 1943) the position of Benito Mussolini became weak even within his National Fascist Party. On July 24, he lost a motion of no confidence in the Grand Council of Fascism. Vittorio Emanuele III. was asked to dismiss Mussolini as Prime Minister. The king did so on July 25, ordered to arrest him and appointed Marshal Pietro Badoglio as new Prime Minister of Italy." [Thomas Manndorff] |
