NotesCaption for exhibition "Corny Pastiche" Templeman Library Gallery, Oct. 2006: "On 19 August
1991, as Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev prepared to sign a new union treaty with leaders of the
republics, a group of hardliners in the Soviet Communist Party staged a coup. Gorbachev was held
under house arrest in the Crimea, but when the coup collapsed after a few days he returned to
Moscow. His relationship to the Soviet Communist Party and the plotters was very close, for he
had been a full party member since 1952, and a member of the Central Committee since 1971.
However, he now resigned as General Secretary, advised the Central Committee to dissolve itself,
and promised to purge the Party. On 18 October 1991 Gorbachev and the representatives of eight
republics signed an agreement forming a new economic community."
