NotesNews: 16 Jan: President Pompidou's arrival on a two-day official visit to the Territory of the Afars and Issas was brief, uneventful and discreet. There were none of the disturbances which marked General de Gaulle's visit in August 1966.
News: 16 Jan: Just a year after the signature of the treaty of accession, the Council of Ministers of the enlarged EEC held its first session in the Palais d'Egmont in Brussels. Sir Alec Douglas-Home, the Foreign Secretary spoke of "the new Community" and said Britain was proud to be a member of so honourable a club. A year ago, he recalled, much was still unfamiliar, "Today I feel among friends, and good friends."
News: 17 Jan: Herr Willy Brandt, the West German Chancellor, and seven federal ministers were to travel to Paris for two days of meetings with President Pomipou. Although this was a regular January meeting it also coincided with the tenth anniversary of the conclusion of the Franco-West German Friendship treaty. For this reason Herr Brandt and M Pompidou with invest each other with their countries' highest decorations.
