NotesNews: 4 May: President Nixon gave a speech to the guest of Mr John Connally, the US Treasury Secretary, in which he said he foresaw a bloodbath among the loyal South Vietnamese "that would stain the hands of the United States for time immemorial". He said that is country like North Vietnam "massively assisted with the most modern technical weapons by two communist superpowers" could invade and conquer another "you can see how that pattern would be repeated in other countries throughout the world. What is on the line in Vietnam is not just peace for Vietnam, but peace in the Middle-East, peace in Europe, and peace not just for the five or six or seven years immediately ahead of us, but possibly for a long time in the future." He added that abandonment of Vietnam would cause a loss of respect for the office of the American Presidency "and I am not going to let that happen".
News: 8 May: The heaviest fighting in North Vietnam's five-week-old offensive into the South was around the Kontum and Pleiku areas where southern troop battled to save the town of Kontum. American bombers returned to attack targets over North Vietnam after an apparent lull.
