NotesNews: 29 Dec: Mr Mintoff was asking for £18m from Britain and Nato for use of Malta as a military base. He appeared to use the prospect of deeper Soviet involvement as a means of raising the bid from Britain and Nato.
News: 30 Dec: All British forces were to be withdrawn from Malta following the breakdown of talks between the Government and Mr Mintoff, the Maltese Prime Minister on new defence arrangements.
