NotesNews: 12 Dec: The final session to reach agreement between Britain and the Common Market on fisheries policy ended after 24 hours. Mr Rippon, Britain's chief negotiator, claimed he had improved a great deal on the original offer of the EEC. The Six agreed to a 12-mile limit during the first 10 years for almost all the areas of coastline requested. These areas were much more extensive than was proposed originally by the Six. They went so far that France, too, was allowed to apply a 12-mile limit to five areas in Brittany and Normandy and would have the same interest as Britain in keeping them in 10 years time.
