NotesNews: 18 Oct: Special Branch officers were working closely with Dutch police investigating how four tons of arms and ammunition from Czechoslovakia came so close to falling into IRA hands. Under the IRA code name "Operation Patriot" the arms were flown from Prague to Amsterdam where they were seized by Dutch police acting on a tip off. ... [The Times] News: 19 Oct: Sir Fitzroy Maclean asked Sir Alec Douglas-Home to keep Mr Wilson fully informed on the details of the cargo of arms for use in Northern Ireland which was intercepted in Amsterdam, so that he would not be able to claim that it was just another Tory election gimmick. ... [The Times] News: 22 Oct: The British committee of the International Press Institute protested to the National Union of Journalists at the disruption of production of the Scottish Daily Express. The disruption was because of objections to a cartoon by Michael Cummings which showed Mr Brezhnev, leader of the Soviet Communist Party, dressed as a Roman Catholic priest leaving an aircraft loaded with tanks for Northern Ireland. The committee considered the action as a serious threat to freedom of expression. [The Times]
