NotesNews: 19 Oct: Conservative backbenchers were
given a free vote for October 28 when the House of Commons divides for or against British
entry into the Common Market. News: 21 Oct: There was to be no free vote for Labour MPs
when the Commons divides on the Government motion asking the House to approve the basis of
the arrangements negotiated for Britain's entry into the Common Market. It was expected
that 70 or more Labour MPs would go into the Government lobby. Douglas Jay was brought to
the front bench to lead in the debate, as the most prominent anti-Market campaigner on the
backbenches. .... [The Times]
