NotesNews: 28 Oct: The Government's majority on the motion approving Britain's entry into the Common Market was expected to be a comfortable one. Sixty-six Labour MPs were expected to support the motion and at most 35 Tories to vote against it. Mr Douglas Houghton, chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party, said that pro-Marketeers would defy the party which but next session they ought to fight the legislation enabling entry. Mr Wedgewood Benn said that taking an unwilling public into Europe would precipitate the biggest constitutional and political crisis for years. ..[The Times]
