NotesNews: 4 May: President Pompidou met his senior ministers and Common Market negotiators to map out France's strategy for the forthcoming talks on British EEC entry, to be held in Brussels. It was thought that France would continue to emphasize its present position, which was that Britain must abide by the rules and principles of the European Community and not ask for concessions which other members could not enjoy. The financial and monetary deadlock were considered to be the real obstacles in the negotiations. France regarded Britain's proposed budget contribution of 3 per cent as too low and it welcomed Britain's suggestion that it was ready to run down its sterling balances to decrease large sums of money deposited in London by other Commonwealth countries. However, Pompidou required more than assurances on Britain's readiness to modify sterling's role in the world.
