NotesNews: 4 March: A peace formula was agreed between both sides in the Post Office dispute after 14 hours of talks. The 200,000 members of the Union of Post Office Workers were to be balloted. The union was asking its members to support the setting up of a committee of inquiry to investigate the 13 per cent pay claim. News: 5 March: Mr Jackson faced a hostile reception at a rally of thousands of strikers at Hyde Park Corner when he tried to explain the peace settlement. He said he would have liked to continue the strike but the union had spent £280,000 last week in hardship payments. They had borrowed £750,000 and there was no money left. He thought he had achieved a good agreement in the circumstances.
