Notes | News: 25 November: Mr Laird, the American Secretary of Defence, sought to assuage rising indignation in the Senate over the abortive attempt to rescue prisoners from a camp near Hanoi. ... As that camp was found empty of prisoners not much credit was accorded to Mr Laird's claims, except by those trying hard to rally support for the courage and daring of the men who took part in the raid. ...[The Times] News: 26 November: Token strikes at post offices and telephone exchanges followed the dismissal of Lord Hall from his position as chairman of the Post Office Corporation. The Government's decision was attacked by union leaders who feared that profitable parts of the Post Office's business were to be hived off to private enterprise. [The Times] News: 26 November: Brian Close, former England cricket captain and Yorkshire's captain since 1963, was dismissed. Geoff Boycott took over as captain. |
