NotesNews: 15 June: The possibility of Heath becoming a prisoner of Powellites and Paisleyites, if the Tories were returned with a small majority was put to the electorate by Wilson at his London news conference. In "this most extremely unfavourable assumption about the outcome of the election the Opposition leader would be a prisoner of two ideologies, each of which relies on intolerance and on the exploitation - even the creation of fear". It was most incredible Wilson said that Heath had avoided any reference to Northern Ireland. He said the Conservative leadership had been dependent to a degree from which they could not escape upon the Ulster Unionist in the Commons. ...
