NotesNews: 15 June: A Gallup Poll survey in 50 key marginal seats showed a Labour lead of 7 per cent. News: 15 June: There was hostile reaction throughout the Tory Party to Enoch Powell's speech widening the division between himself and the Shadow Cabinet on immigration policy. Heath put out a statement in reply to Powell's speech on "the enemy within the gates", delivered in Birmingham on the 13th June 1970. Heath restated his position on immigration and insisted that he would not allow obsessive questions about Enoch Powell to overshadow the fundamental issues on which the electorate ought to be making up its mind.
