NotesNews: 6 June: A question about press treatment of his speeches and comments on race drew from Enoch Powell a sharp attack on newspaper editors at a crowded meeting at Halesowen, Worcestershire. He said that the very editors who denigrated him, sneered at him and tried to suppress him were obliged to admit against their will that he was "right about these things. In the long run the press will print what we find it interesting to read. It so happens I never talk about race. Indeed I do not know what race is." Powell said that he had never got a clear answer, for instance, to the question about whether Englishmen and Welshmen were of the same race. Race, he said, was a "four-letter word which is substituted for what I do talk about - a subject which affects the future of this part of the country and of many parts of the country".
