NotesNews: 17 April: The three Apollo 13 astronauts, James Lovell, Fred Haise and John Swigert were on board the recovery ship Iwo Jima after a perfect landing in the Pacific. Nixon flew to Hawaii to greet the astronauts and present them with the Medal of Freedom. News: 18 April: The hairbreadth nature of the escape from death of the crew of Apollo 13 when their craft suffered an explosion during the mission became dramatically apparent when Captain Lovell's crew made the first dangerous manoeuvre in preparation for return to earth.
