NotesNews: 19 Feb: President Nixon announced a new strategy for peace. He stated what he considered to be the three requirements for peace, namely partnership, strength and willingness to negotiate. This policy would be applied globally, but with less American involvement. "We can no more disengage from Europe than from Alaska", he said, and that the postwar period of dependence on the US had passes. He said American troop strength in Europe would be maintained at least until mid-1971. News: 20 Feb: Denis Healey, Secretary of State for Defence, criticised those who cast doubts on Nato's nuclear strategy and on the credibility of the US nuclear guarantee to Europe. He introduced his annual White Paper.
