NotesNews: 4 Feb: Kosygin sent messages to Harold
Wilson, Georges Pompidou and Richard Nixon expressing Russia's concern at the growing scale
of Israel bombing deep inside Egypt and of the increased fighting on the Israel-Syrian
frontier. If the Arab states neighbouring Israel continued to be subjected to air attacks
there was a clear warning the at the Soviet Government would send the latest MiG 23
fighters to Egypt with Soviet pilots. The aim of Kosygin's message was to demonstrate
striking support for the Arabs in the face of growing disillusionment and increased demands
for arms and to dissuade President Nixon from sending further Phantom jets to Israel. The
British reply made clear that the British Government shared the Soviet concern and wished
to renew their efforts for a peaceful solution.
