NotesFrom Frankfurter Allgemeine. News: May 14: President Nasser and the Soviet leader, Nikita Khruschev, today joined hands to press a button that changed the course of the Nile, A huge sand barrage was blown up and the river diverted into a canal to allow the next stage of the Aswan High Dam to start. The dam will increase Egypt's agricultural land by a third and double electric power output. But it will also raise the upstream level of the river 200 feet, inundating the ancient temples and tombs of the Pharaohs; a worldwide appeal is being made for funds to rescue the treasures.
