NotesNews: Oct 7: A "manifesto of beliefs concerning he Conservative Party" was published yesterday by the Monday Club, the group which boasts Lord Salisbury and Lord Boyd of Merton as its patrons and regards itself as a Right Wing counterblast to the Bow Group. The authors of the pamphlet, Lord Newry and Mr Robin Garran say: "Conservatism is falling short in its attempts to escape being labelled the party of privilege. Too much of the old school-tie, of nepotism, of clubbiness still remain under a facade of Victorian institutionalism."... In a press conference launching the pamphlet Lord Newry associated the decline in Conservative leadership from the time when the slogan "You've never had it so good" was invented. In the last three years Conservatism had seemed to drift "without ideas or purpose under an aura of secrecy and condescension. ... [The Guardian 7/10/1963]
