NotesRepublished in David Low, Europe at War, (Penguin Books, 1941). Printed on opposite page: "Himmler, chief of the Nazi Gestapo, having "done" the Netherlands, now proceeded to start work on Belgium." p.70. Republished in David Low, Low's War Cartoons, Cresset Press, 1941. Notes: In October 1939 Himmler was appointed Reichs Commissar for the strengthening of German nationhood. He was given absolute control over the newly annexed territory of Poland. Polish Jews and Slavs were rounded up and exterminated by Himmler's forces as part of Himmler's fanatical devotion to the creation of an Aryan super-race. In the Netherlands Himmler continued this purging of 'undesirable elements', establishing a euthanasia programme for the chronically sick and handicapped. On 28 May 1940 Belgium surrendered to German forces and King Leopold III was arrested. Himmler's activities in Belgium would surely mirror that of previously occupied territories.
